Chennai City receives heaviest ever January rainfall in 100 years

Tami Nadu has received Historical January Rainfall in the last 24-48 hours. Chennai city records 161 mm in this January making it it’s wettest January in the last 100 years.

The Next Wet Phase is likely to begin from January 9th. On the influence of an Easterly wave, Coastal regions and some parts of Interior Tamilnadu is likely to receive Moderate to rather intermittent heavy showers.
There is a probable chance of Extremely Heavy falls over isolated pockets of the Leeward side of Western Ghats in South Interior Tamilnadu.

South Interior Karnataka and parts of Western Ghats are set to experience Moderate to Heavy showers in some places in the next 24-36 hours. Indeed JANUARY 2021 is A Memorable Month in recent times for Unseasonal Rains across parts of India.

What next for NEM 2020/21 ?

The Extended North East Monsoon is set to bid adieu to Chennai and North Tamil Nadu after this wave. But initial forecasts do look good for another round of Wet Activity in Bay of Bengal around Jan 20th. But It’s unlikely to significantly affect Tamil Nadu and Coastal Regions.
